Turkey rebrands as “Türkiye” after UN approval

Turkey will be known as “Türkiye” at the United Nations (UN) after it approved on Wednesday the Turkey’s government request to change the name aiming to increase the country’s brand value.

UN accepted the change and it became effective after they received the request and verified that the document is legitimate, UN Spokesman said.

“The process we started under the leadership of our President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in order to increase our country’s brand value is to be finalized,” Turkish government official, Cavusoglu tweeted on Tuesday.

UN Spokesman added that all countries are free to choose the way they want to be named and it not considered as an issue for the UN to accept or refuse.

Turkish government succeed in laying the groundwork for the rebrand along with collaboration of Turkey’s Directorate of Communications, Fahrettin Altun.

Altun posted a promotional video on Twitter on Wednesday with caption: #HelloTürkiye, which made it possible for the UN and other international organizations, and countries to see this change to using ‘Türkiye.’

The campaign to rebrand as Türkiye began in December, as the President said at that time “Türkiye is the best representation and expression of the Turkish people’s culture, civilization, and values.”
