Egypt’s Deputy Foreign Minister attends G5 Sahel conference in Chad

Ambassador Hamdi Sanad Loza, Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for African Affairs, is attending the two-day seventh regular session of Heads of State of the G5 Sahel summit in the Chadian capital N’Djamena.

The summit began on Monday, and will last for two days in the presence of representatives from partner countries, and international and regional organisations.

During the conference, the Presidency position for the G5 Sahel states group will be transferred from Mauritania to Chad.

It will also evaluate the results of cooperation in the face of terrorism, and the advancement of development efforts whilst overcoming the effects of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic during the coming period.

Egypt is an important partner for the Sahel countries, and the two sides have historic ties which contribute to building the capabilities of these countries in the civilian and military fields.Aside from also contributing to the UN peacekeepers in Mali, Egypt has hosted a meeting of the Chiefs-of-Staff from the five Sahel countries in February 2020.

Envoys from Egypt’s Al-Azhar and the Ministry of Endowments have both allocated financing to the Sahel countries, to contribute to countering the spread of extremist ideology among the youth.

Several Egyptian ministries and companies have also contributed to implementing projects and providing aid to these countries.
