{"id":323987,"date":"2021-11-23T17:44:58","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T17:44:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egy-africa.com\/en\/?p=323987"},"modified":"2021-11-24T10:54:06","modified_gmt":"2021-11-24T10:54:06","slug":"egypt-is-head-of-comesa-for-12m-targets-regional-integration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egy-africa.com\/en\/2021\/11\/23\/egypt-is-head-of-comesa-for-12m-targets-regional-integration\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt is head of COMESA for 12M, targets regional integration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Egypt has assumed the chairmanship of the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comesa.int\/\">Common Market for Eastern and<\/a><\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comesa.int\/\">Southern Africa (Comesa)<\/a><\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> a regional trade bloc that looks to align regulatory and trade policies of its 21 members<\/p>\n<p>The baton was passed to Egypt at Comesa\u2019s annual summit held at the new capital yesterday; the North African country will use our 12 months at the helm to steer the organization\u2019s 2021-2025 goals to improve regional trade, it said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comesa.int\/the-21st-comesa-summit-gets-underway-in-cairo\/\">a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Tuesday that Egypt\u2019s presidency of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa bloc (COMESA) aims to achieve regional integration by developing intra-regional trade, as well as leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).<\/p>\n<p>El-Sisi underscored the necessity of introducing exemptions to customs as agreed upon within the framework of the AfCFTA.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt is assuming the presidency of the summit for the first time since 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Zambia hosted the last COMESA summit in Lusaka in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEgypt will seek to follow up on this mechanism in cooperation with the COMESA\u2019s general secretariat and member states,\u201d El-Sisi said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that Egypt will strive to promote continental integration and highlight the progress made within the framework of the regional integration of COMESA, the East African Community, and the Southern African Development Community.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt will also work on encouraging the countries that signed the AfCFTA agreement to start enforcing its terms, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He highlighted his proposal to set up a mechanism to review the trade policies of member states on a periodic basis to ensure the effective implementation of customs privileges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Egypt has assumed the chairmanship of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa), a regional trade bloc that looks to align regulatory and trade policies of its 21 members<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":323988,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[33,21],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-323987","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-main","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.3 -
