{"id":321228,"date":"2021-02-23T10:42:55","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T10:42:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egy-africa.com\/en\/?p=321228"},"modified":"2021-02-23T10:42:55","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T10:42:55","slug":"e-economy-expected-to-add-180-bln-to-africas-gdp-by-2025-due-to-coronavirus-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egy-africa.com\/en\/2021\/02\/23\/e-economy-expected-to-add-180-bln-to-africas-gdp-by-2025-due-to-coronavirus-report\/","title":{"rendered":"E-economy expected to add $180 bln to Africa\u2019s GDP by 2025, due to coronavirus: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The internet economy is expected to add up to $180 billion to Africa\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2025, accounting for 5.2 percent of the continent\u2019s GDP, according to a report on e-economy issued by the International Finance Corporation in collaboration with Google.<\/p>\n<p>By 2050, e-economy is projected to add up to $712 billion to Africa\u2019s GDP, representing 8.5 percent of its GDP, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Africa\u2019s GDP witnessed a growth of 4 percent per year between 2010 and 2019, more than twice that of European countries (1.7 percent) and Latin America (1.7) over the same period, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>The report said that the African internet economy is one of the largest overlooked investment opportunities of the past decade with potential for profound impact on the continent\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>It also noted that despite the COVID-19 pandemic and its related harsh impacts on the global macroeconomy, including Africa, African e-economy is expected to be resilient, as usage of digital connectivity and services have increased significantly during the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The report expected e-commerce, e-logistics, education-tech, fintech, entertainment, and health tech to be the sub sectors that will drive the resilience of Africa\u2019s e-economy.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, subsectors of urban mobility, hospitality, events, and travel will continue struggling to recover, said the report.<\/p>\n<p>The report underscored since 2000, the number of people that have access to the internet in Africa has grown to over 520 million, representing 40 percent of the continent\u2019s population, and 60 percent of the population accesses that internet using mobile phones.<\/p>\n<p>Out of that, the report projected that if 75 percent of the population got internet access it could create 44 million jobs in the African market.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the internet economy provides significant opportunities for the informal sector, which has been hit severely by the pandemic, to address its challenges, especially that informal businesses are a fast-growing sector in Africa, according to the report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The internet economy is expected to add up to $180 billion to Africa\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2025, accounting for 5.2 percent of the continent\u2019s GDP, according to a report on e-economy issued by the International Finance Corporation in collaboration with Google.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":320305,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[31],"tags":[275],"class_list":["post-321228","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-financial-products","tag-e-commerce"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.3 -
