Cement manufacturers remain plagued by their longstanding oversupply problem, with existing production lines during 2020 having the capacity to produce 38 million tonnes more than the country needs, according to LaFarge Egypt CEO Solomon Baumgartner Aviles.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s going to take more than just lower natural gas prices to uplift Egypt\u2019s ailing cement industry, he noted.<\/p>\n
According to Aviles, the price of natgas should $ 1.7 per mmBtu \u2014 which is much lower than the current $4.5 per mmBtu manufacturers and exporters pay \u2014 to entice cement producers to use natgas instead of carbon-intensive coke fuel.<\/p>\n
Manufacturers can\u2019t offload excess inventory through exports, either, because inflated production costs would make it hard to compete abroad, Aviles said. And it\u2019s not just high energy prices that are driving the high input costs. A weaker EGP (since the float) and higher taxes also play into the difficulties, Aviles added.<\/p>\n
Background<\/strong>: Things have gone from bad to worse for the cement industry since the supply glut began in 2016. The inauguration of a large state-owned cement factory in 2018 intensified the pre existing issues, quickly leading to several companies suspending operations, some temporarily and others permanently.
