The value of the clothing trade in Egypt exceeds about EGP 300 billion annually, according to the Chairperson of the Ready-Made Garments Chamber at the Federation of Egyptian Industries, Mohamed Abdel Salam.
On the sidelines of signing a protocol of cooperation between the Ready-Made Garments Chamber and Gahez Digital Marketing, Abdel Salam noted that the clothing industry has been improving significantly after the decline in imports due to decree no. 43 which obligated importers to register with the General Organization for Export and Import Control (GOEIC).
Afterwards, local companies started to improve their products and manufacture high-quality clothing to cater to the needs of the market, he pointed out.
Egypt currently produces 80 percent of the local market’s needs of ready-made garments and imports only 20 percent.
He added that Egypt’s annual exports of garments stand at $1.5 billion.
Some 150 garment factories have been qualified to increase their production and boost exports, Abdel Salam noted.
