Sudanese shipment is first commercial ship to arrive in Egypt’s Al-Tor Port in years
Egypt’s Al-Tor Port in South Sinai received on Wednesday its first commercial ship in years, the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) announced in a statement.
The ship Trust-1, which arrived from Suakin port in Sudan, was carrying 1,495 calves, which was the first batch of a total 3,000 calves that will be used to cover the red meat needs of South Sinai and other governorates.
South Sinai Governor Khaled Foda said in the statement that Al-Tor Port usually receives maintenance ships for oil dredgers.
The governor noted that the calves were moved to veterinary quarantine belonging to the non-profit Misr Al-Kheir Foundation in Al-Tor city.
Sudan and Brazil are Egypt’s main suppliers of cattle. In 2015, the Egyptian government signed a contract to import around 800,000 heads of cattle from Sudan over three years at a cost of $800 million.
Chairman of the Suez Canal Zone Yehia Zaki said that Al-Tor is set to receive other commercial ships during the coming period.
The SCZone is currently working on a five-year plan to develop its affiliated ports to raise their efficiency and allow them to compete with other ports in the Red and Mediterranean seas, the statement said.
